This is by far the tiniest of dwellings I have ever seen. The 8 sqm (86 sqft) studio apartment, formally a maid’s room in an elegant Haussmann building, was remodeled by studio Kitoko to serve as an independent living space for one person. In spite of its confined dimensions, the apartment includes all the necessities: twin bed, dining table with two chairs, wardrobe, kitchenette, fully equipped bathroom and a decent amount of storage. And thanks to the clever built-ins, the elements slide out when you need them, and disappear, when you don’t. Check the floor plans after the break to see how the areas are nested to utilize every inch.

(thank you, Dragana)

This product has been created in the shoebox dweller’s heaven. The Floyd Leg is a table leg with the simple clamping mechanism that can be attached to any surface material. The possibilities are truly endless. The legs are compact, easy to store and transport, and they ship flat, saving money and resources. Brilliant! The Floyd leg comes in two sizes.

UrbMat Outdoor Growing Front

It’s almost time for balcony gardening, and this compact solution can be a perfect contender for a limited outdoor space. UrbMat is a small-space garden idea that takes the guesswork out of growing your own herbs, vegetables, and flowers. All you need is a small area of dirt or a raised bed 3X2 feet in size to get started. The seeds come in protective encasements, GrowUps, that already include all that is needed for a plant to flourish – a mix of chili powder, compost, worm castings, and clay. Simply lay UrbMat on top of the soil, press the GrowUps into the corresponding holes, and leave it to do its magic. I think, even I can do that.

accordion5

Danish design collective Makers with Agendas came up with this idea of a compact trestle, called Accordion. As the name suggests, these stands expand and retract depending on the situation. Perfect for improvised dining arrangements, Accordion trestles take virtually no room in their folded state. When unfolded, they can support almost any tabletop. The project debuted at the Stockholm Furniture Fair 2014. Available for purchase through designers’ website.

8A_1

This 76-square-meter residence in Leiden, Netherlands has been built by Dutch firm 8A Architecten. The goal was to create a temporary dwelling for a family living in Paris, the place was intended to be low key, but comfortable and spacious. In order to create an illusion of space, the house was completely stripped of all interior walls. The ample storage is hidden inside multiple built-ins, custom made for this interior. But my favorite feature by far is the staircase that merges into a sofa. It gives fluidity to the design, creating a long continuous line of oak wood, which also adds to the optical illusion of a bigger space. For a full tour of the house see more photos after the break.
