What would a shelving system look like if playful customization was its main objective? This question was posed by Danish design studio KiBiSi, and the answer came to them in a form of an architectural bookshelf, called Slice. The main feature of the system is a slice of plywood. In assembly the slices fit together for individual display, which allows for optimum flexibility of the system and makes it adaptable to any, even small or awkward space.
Lithuania based design studio etc.etc. came up with this clever modular storage item, called Foldin. This shelving unit is comprised of a wooden frame and folding shelves (hence the name). The frame is expandable and can hold from two to twenty shelf segments. Each shelf is made of three plywood pannels connected to each other via a piece of felt. This flexible structure allows to change the look of the unit easily depending on a situation. The frame itself can serve as a holder for hooks or hangable items. The piece ships and stores flat.
Pools is a minimalist collection of stoneware by Vancouver based design studio Fleet Objects. The line consists of plates, bowls and other types of multifunctional vessels that can be combined or used separately in many different ways. The pieces can work equally well as tableware for serving food and drink, vases for displaying flowers, containers for storing things, or all of these purposes depending on the occasion. Minimalist and multifunctional – the two of my favorite m-words… Add to this a well-thought-out color scheme that allows you to mix and match these pieces and always strike a beautiful combination. We’re all familiar with the idea of a pegboard for our kitchen and garage storage. Korean designer Saehee Her has built on that concept and created a fun and highly customizable TV entertainment stand. The system is made of wood, plywood and aluminum and allows creating various configurations. Thanks to the peg principle, you can build customizable shelving. Perforated storage units hide additional equipment and cables. The piece is easy on the eyes too. What a cool and playful way to organize our media storage…

This beautifully minimal shelf, called The Small “b”, has been created by Hamburg based designer Holon ID. The solid oak wooden frame is combined with the stainless steel mounting brackets. These brackets becomes invisible once the shelf is filled with books. As the result the books and the frame seem to be floating in the air. What a cool idea! There are 12 modular sizes available, so whatever your reading preferences are – artbooks, enciclopedias or paperbacks – The Small “b” will fit them all.

Thanks To The Tree is a creative collaboration between designer David Boon and carpenter De Lappen. And this cool and clever Print Cupboard (love the bookshelf feature!) is their first love child. When you order the piece you have a choice of 10 unique prints. The Klaffi-hylly (clapperboard) shelf by Finland based studio ELSA is a multifunctional and adaptable item. This shelving system is built with small spaces in mind, it allows you to fold the shelves you are not using and slim the unit down. Klaffi-hylly can fit many storage needs, you can use it for magazines, books, DVDs, CDs, cookbooks, dishes, collectibles… It can also work well as a bedside table/shelving unit or an entryway item. The piece comes in solid oak, ash and white birch and is available in natural, black, white, orange and light blue finishes.
Verso Shelf is a minimalist and versatile piece, created by Finland-based designer Mikko Halonen for furniture brand One Nordic. Slick and transparent, the piece allows you to store (and display) things without physical and visual clutter. The shelf comes with three magazine stands, which can be attached to any of the ladders of the shelf, at the height you prefer. Thanks to this clever addition, you can use Verso for clothes, accessories or whatever comes into mind. The piece is available in two sizes and three colors – black, white and natural wood. If you are a bookish person I doubt you can stay impartial to this table/bookshelf/bookmark. Booken by Raw Edges, designed for Italian furniture brand Lema, is every bookworm’s wet dream. It uses books as building material and in turn provides an attractive display for them. It also allows you to recycle the volumes you’ve read once and have no intention of coming back to. “We were inspired by the fact that people do not re-read the novels that are so often on the shelves,” designers explain. “Most books are usually read once and not re-read, and then we thought, why not use the volumes as if they have a plan? Of course you can always remove the book and read it, but at the same time the books take on a new role.” I also remember that Shay Alkalay of Raw Edges has been toying with the idea of a bookcase like that for a few years now, even built one for his personal use. It is pleasing to see that commercial birth has been finally given to this concept. Booken is displayed as part of Lema’s exposition at this year’s IMM Cologne.
