This modular storage system by Fritz und Franken does everything modular storage should do – it adapts to any space size and shape, it is easy to plan and even easier to put together. The modules are held in place by side-mounted runners and skids placed along the opening edges of each cube. Clever. The boxes come in several pleasing pastel colors, so they will look right at home in any room. And made from the renewable polyrey high pressure laminate (a material that is made of 65% paper), this furniture is as eco-friendly as it is goodlooking.

Finally, a charging stand that will work with any device, past present and future one, Apple or Android. Yay!.. San-Francisco based collective DODOcase, in collaboration with Stikwood, created Charing Nest, an elegant adaptable changing station. The piece features rich, smooth orchard walnut with a leather wrap made from American-tanned Logger’s Leather. It is compatible with the following devices: 30-Pin cable (from the Original iPhone and iPad through iPhone 4S); Lightning cable (iPhone 5/5S/5C, iPad mini, iPad Air, and forthcoming iPhone 6); Micro-USB cable for all Android devices. The Charging Nest is wide enough to accommodate any cover too. Sold here.
I quite like this slim and minimal desk by Nathan Yong. Inspired by mid-century design, the piece looks modern and vintage at the same time, a difficult fit to pull. The desk is compact, the work surface is big enough for a laptop and a writing area. The two sets of drawers, one under the desktop and one above, provide storage for papers, writing paraphernalia and other essentials. The upper drawers also serve as an additional surface for your lamp, books, or other whatnots that would otherwise take out desktop space. The frame and the drawer fronts are made from solid American walnut, the rest – from veneer and MDF. Available for purchase here.
How simple and cleve is this? Shelves that mold around objects! Shelfie by Finland based designer Nikolo Kerimov allows you to bend your storage your way. The system is comprised of a light timber frame and flexible textile shelves that you can attach horizontally, vertically or diagonally. A truly nomadic product, Shelfie can be disassembled in minutes and folded flat for easy storage and transportation.
Neat freaks – rejoice. This modular furniture system by Ying Chang is made with you in mind. Aptly called Grid, this concept is inspired by the two-dimensional grid used by graphic designers. Here the grid principle translates into a series of transparent mesh components of various sizes that attach to each other, creating unique customizable storage. The same piece can be used as a desk, dining area, kitchen storage and more. The designer explains: “As living spaces get smaller and merge with working spaces, the use of tables, desks and shelving are evolving, yet their basic forms remain largely unchanged.” The main storage components are supplemented by various add-ons – shelves, pockets, boards, even coasters and place mats. Another great customizable idea. Check out the video and more photos after the break.
I really like this sleek compact desk by New York based designer Piet Houtenbos. It features a clever storage compartment, that, in my opinion, is an excellent alternative to drawers. Here is what the designer says about it: “Wynd is a new way to think about desk storage – it’s designed to be as thin as possible while maintaining useful storage. Thinness poses a unique problem for old fashioned storage (aka drawers): to access anything larger than a pencil you are forced to move your chair back to pull the drawer all the way open and retrieve the item. Instead, with no visible hardware (even underneath!), Wynd splits in two to reveal its contents.” To open the compartment, simply press the felted area in the center. Thanks to the innovative mechanism, the compartment stays open or closed without any additional manipulations.
Designed by David Manning of Not Just Chairs, Your Position is a bright idea for a home office, and here is why. It is adjustable and allows you to alternate between sitting and standing (points for your back health), it comes with various storage components that can be arranged in many different ways (points for modularity), finally – the system can be disassembled and stored flat (points for space-saving). And, if you need to shift gears completely, say, to entertain a group of guests, you can remove the desk and turn the station into a room divider. With storage. Yay.
This super small folding chair has been created by the young Polish designer Pawel Kochanski. Inspired by the compactness of the carry-on luggage, the chair is tri-folded to meet the dimensions. Here is how Pawel describes his idea:
“Main concept was to create a folding chair which size will meet hand luggage dimensions restrictions that are common for most of the airlines. Object after folding was supposed not to exceed dimensions 55x40x20 cm. To meet these requirements and at the same time make useful and comfortable chair, a lot of case studies were done. Developed way of folding may seem to be complex at first sight, but in fact it’s really easy and simple. Chair is rather light thanks to chosen materials and has a string which could be used to carry it like a bag. Mobility was also one of the issues for creating this chair.”
I also like the fact that this space-saving design doesn’t compromise function. Both the seat and the backrest are wide enough for support and the angle between them allows comfortable lounging.
I am rarely this excited about a product. Fläpps shelving system from Ambivalenz is everything I have ever loved about space-saving furniture. Each module is a stand-alone shelf that can be combined with other Fläpps modules to become a wall shelving system. A unique wall mounting mechanism effortlessly permits up to 5 shelves to be stacked vertically. When unfolded, the Fläpps shelving system offers endless applications in the office, living room, kitchen, dressing room or entrance hall. And if you need to display a tall item or simply don’t need all this surface space (like that’ll ever happen), simply fold the shelves up. The piece comes in black and white and in various sizes.
