Squambo – is a modular, multifunctional bookcase from Nintek Design. Based on two differently sized shelving components, the piece can be put together in many different ways. You can build it vertically, horizontally, asymmetrically – the combinations are endless. Apart from book storage, the system will allow you to create wall shelving, media storage, additional seating, even a room divider. And since only two standard panels are used, assembly can be kept simple and the production cost – manageable. Smart stuff!
This bookcase is a proof that product designers are geeking out too. A human height book robot, called Robox, was created by Fabio Novembre for Casamania. The piece is made of metal, and thanks to its unexpected shape can house books of many different sizes. The red heart feature is especially touching. I could think of a few tomes to put in there…
Here is another eye candy for the avid readers and sitters – the Bookshelf chair by Beijing-based designer Wenshuai Liu. This minimalistic piece includes a bookshelf right below its seat, which resembles the good old school chair only far more elegant. It is nice to see that in the era of electronic readers, books are still going strong and giving inspiration to designers. Maybe even more than they did before…
Half lamp, half bookshelf, all brilliant… Called Readme, the piece belongs to German designer Peter Böckel. The shape of this unusual object resembles a lampshade with some characteristics of a small chest. The elegant hybrid includes two storage levels, one inside the ‘shade’ and another one – on top. The business part of Readme is made of steel and supported by four maple legs; the light is coming through the translucent top surface. The piece will be presented at DMY Berlin this week.
When it comes to making our space appear bigger, the less storage we see – the better. This cool little item, called Selfshelf, allows you to create stacks of books seemingly floating in the air. That is because the bottom ‘book’ is a shelf in disguise. The title of it reads ‘Ceci n’est pas un livre’ (which is a fancy way of saying ‘this is not a book’). A subtle gag, only noticeable under closer inspection, adds charm to this lovely design idea. The shelf is available at Dutchbydesign.com.
