Fold-shelf-by-Stass

When it comes to clutter – it’s all about the little things. Without a proper place they tend to accumulate and create visual frenzy. This little shelf by Icelandic architects Árný Þórarinsdóttir and Helga Guðrún Vilmundardóttir of studio Stáss can be just the thing to solve the problem. Thanks to its clever shape, Fold shelf is able to accommodate many different types of objects, which makes it useful for busy areas of the house – entryway, kitchen, home office. The piece is made from powder coated aluminum and comes in turquoise and gray.

If you long for proper gardening, but the capacity of your apartment stifles this dream – you might want to take a look at this project. Urban Harvest Series by Netherlands based designer Sebastiaan Sennema is a compact unit that allows you to enjoy all essential gardening moments in a confined space. It includes an oak table for potting and preparation, a terracotta cooling tray for storing harvested produce, and a new, aesthetic take on the traditional “worm bin” for the natural composting of kitchen waste. The piece is also envisioned as a way of integrating nature and cultivating a consciousness of its mechanisms into our daily home life. “This unit is more than a possession; it’s a philosophy,” – designer says.

Hookoo storage solution is a recent creation of the China based design studio Milk. Versatile and aesthetically stunning, it can be used in different applications – in the kitchen, bathroom, home office, living room, you name it. The system of hooks houses semi-opaque containers, that vary in size and shape and accommodate different storage needs. And with many choices available, you can build your storage wall to be as large or small as you like. Beautiful idea and execution!

Here is a clever way to put work at home on its proper place – a wall desk that closes when not in use. The piece, designed by Canada based designer Glenn Ross, offers a practical and space-saving approach to home office. Designed to be used when standing, it is perfect for underused spaces. You can mount it in the entryway or even in the kitchen as a mail sorting/writing/catch all item. Slots and drawers are sized to fit standard letter paper. The desk is made from bent birchply with a choice of five wood veneers.

I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of cabby hooks. They elevate our stuff off the surface, they are gentle to our textiles and they look fun. On this occasion they also come in different sizes and shapes. Angolo hooks by French designer Sébastien Cordoleani for Parisian brand Moustache made me look. These wall-mounted colorful packets allow you to store keys, change, devices and other small items, while large things like coats, jackets and scarves can be hung over the tops. Simple and useful, great for small entryways. Angolo hooks are made from powder coated metal and come in verious colors and shapes.

This beautifully made coffee table has been created by Australian designer David Cummins. The piece is inspired by mid-20th century modernist aesthetic, which is a bit of a fetish of mine. I also like the small size of the table – only about 47 inches long and 16 inches wide. But in spite of its modest proportions the piece boasts ample storage, thanks to two generous drawers. A perfect little piece, that can lend an air of class to any dwelling. Bridge coffee table is handcrafted from solid Tesmanian Blackwood and finished with natural oil and wax.

This stunningly minimalist small apartment in Thiseio, one of the oldest neighborhoods in downtown Athens, has been built by architect Werner Maritsas. Initially the tiny 32-square-meter space was divided into four rooms and a corridor. So, some serious wall breaking had to take place. “With the first look at the house, I realized the potential,” – says Werner. – To open all the space, to lighten the main area by allowing more natural light in and leading the view to garden was, for me, the only solution. In this spirit I’ve opened completely the house to the garden creating an indoor/outdoor effect and replacing the old light well walls with two floor-to-ceiling windows,  creating a more or less dual-light aspect.” Nearly all functional elements in this home exist in the form of built-ins. This approach eliminates visual clutter and creates unity of the surfaces, essential in a small space. Watch the video by Fair Companies to get the tour of the apartment and hear the history of this amazing reno. Also check out Werner’s website for the compelling before-and-afters.

tempaper_diy_context_2_web

A few days ago I was talking about the alternatives to a traditional wallpaper. Here is one, that is as fool-proof as it can get – Tempaper. The idea for Tempaper was born when a group of set decorators for the film, television and entertainment industries decided to create a peel-and-stick wallpaper that was affordable, easy to install, and just as easy to uninstall. Because it’s self-adhesive, you can use the paper not only on walls, but on any smooth surfaces in good condition, such as doors, cabinet faces, ceilings, and paneling. Genius! It even comes in the DIY Art variety – a peel-and-stick wall covering that is blank and ready to take paint, crayon, pencil, marker, pastel and just about anything else. Perfect for kids and artsy adults. To install Tempaper remove the backing along the top edge and roll it down your wall, pressing with your hands to smooth it out as it sticks. No glues, pastes, water or brushes are needed. To take it off just pull from a corner and let it rip. See the video after the break for a demonstration. Available for purchase here.
