There is a lot to love about this modular storage system. Mix Boxes by The Utility Collective are modular, eco-friendly and easy to put together. The set includes six boxes of various shapes and sizes that allow you to create many configurations based on your space requirements and storage needs. And what an attractive way to break visual boredom… The pieces are made in the USA without the use of formaldehyde or other harmful substances. The sides of each box interlock, creating a strong adhesive-free bond. And if you want to take your set apart and use segments of it as separate items of furniture, it can be done in minutes.
Some of you might remember the Stacked Shelving, designed by wonderful Julien De Smedt of JDS Architects for Muuto. If you like it as much as I do, you will be happy to know that the Stacked family has expanded with a new wall-mounted Mini Stacked series. Just as beautiful, modular and organic, the pieces can be arranged on your wall in many different combinations (with the same cool clips, holding them together). Here is what designer has to say about the project: “How to be specific and generic altogether? Shelving systems have a tendency to achieve one concern but never both. We decided to dimension shelving units based on the generic measurements of things to store and display while allowing for them to be combined according to specific needs and desires… the result can be at times a random stack of boxes or a coordinated grid of efficient storage… or both!” Mini Stacked is envisioned for things you want to store and display at the same time, a “modest shelving to show your great things…”
I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of slot-in pieces of furniture. I featured them before and always look forward to finding new ones. This particular item, called Smartsquare and created by Milan based designer Pietro Russomanno, is a beautiful multifunctional piece, allowing for many exciting configurations. Made of bent plywood, each square module can be easily connected through slots in its side, which makes the system a child’s play to assemble. Different hues are available, so you can play with color combinations, as well as shapes.

This elegant, glue- and tool-free storage system made me look. Tokio born and Danmark based designer Yukari Hotta created these simple shelves, called Kile, that can be assembled without any tools or toxic adhesives. Just interlock the components and secure them with wooden wedges. Made from an eco labeled wood board material, the piece is sleek and minimalist. A variety of soft colors allows you to play with different combinations while customizing the unit. And because the furniture can be disassembled in seconds, it can be easily stored. All components are shipped flat, which adds to the eco-friendly pedigree of the product.
Riveli shelving system by Mark Kinsley is a clever and visually delightful storage solution. Not only it is modular and transformable into any number of layouts, it can be disguised as artwork when not in use. The system is comprised of two components – wall mounted base kits and actual shelves. The artwork is attached in parts to the back side of each shelf to create an image. You even have a choice in the way of attachment. It can be permanent and achieved via peel-away adhesive strips; or temporary, done via magnets or slide-in rails. And with three types of modular base kits available, you can create an unlimited number of configurations, even frame a flat panel TV or window.

This is just delightful. A bookshelf designed to be assembled like a game, with no screws, tools or indeed muscles involved. Created by Gonçalo Campos, the piece is a soaring example of elegant functionality. It is comprised of two parts that interlock via simple slots, providing for a sturdy construction. The ‘X’ part gives structural integrity to the shelf, whereas the ‘I’ part contributes to its dynamic look. I also love that the instructions are engraved on the piece itself – no paper to fiddle with or lose. Beautiful, no-nonsense approach.
This simple and clever shelving system by Mehtap Obuz of Demirden Design for Ilio is modular and can perform several tasks. Comprised of light wooden components, Katkat can be stacked as high or as low as you want. And because there are two sets of connecting holes in each segment, you can adjust the height of the shelves – perfect for oversized books of magazines. And if you need extra seating, each unit can serve as a stool. The item is light, intuitive in assembly and visually stimulating. The piece can be made from oak, walnut and/or african padouk, which is another beautiful variable – you can mix and match layers of different colors.
I can never get enough book and bike storage, and when I see these things combined – it’s Christmas. Bookbike by BYografia is a clever hybrid, addressing both your reading and riding needs. The piece is comprised of two parts – one features shelves for your books, another – a hook for your bike. And because the rack is adjustable, it can accomodate a bike of any size. The base is equipped with adaptable legs to ensure the stability of the structure. I also quite like the somewhat retro feel of this design. Bookbike comes in chalk white and gray antracite.
This trapezoid-like storage, designed by Daniele Luciano Ferrazzano, contains many elements we, small space dwellers, like. It is modular and multifunctional, not to mention – an eye candy. The construction of this shelving system includes three types of elements: shelves (which can have both open and closed display options), wooden panels and metal climps, upon which the system is rested. Thus, the assembly is fast and tool free, and, by varying sizes of the elements, multiple configurations can be achieved. You can even take the modules apart and turn them into extra seating. Brilliant.
This beautiful shelving system, called Ladder Rack, was created by Japanese designer Naoya Matsuo. The components of the piece are interchangeable and able to accomodate various storing needs. The assembly process is simplified and intuitive. Position shelves according to your preferences, secure them with the red rope, and voila. No wall mount is needed. The shelving unit comes in two sizes and can be folded and put away when not in use (although, I am yet to see storage furniture resting in the closet).
