Recycled and recyclable, this cool paper basket has been created by Emanuele Pizzolorusso. This idea has been done by others (and noticed by garbage nerds like me), but the cupcake holder resemblance here takes the prize. 50 pleated bags, all stacked into each other, make for an effortless trash removal. Once the top bag is filled, throw it away with the contents and move to the next one, repeat. Beautiful, easy and eco-friendly.
As you have probably noticed, I am fascinated by trash cans. And my quest for finding the best possible one never ends. This next item is approaching an ideal. A clever eco-friendly trash can, called Urbano, allows you to store and reuse all those plastic bags that you collect from shopping in a neat and organized way. Simply loop trash bags around the cut-out sides and push them all the way down, creating a visual of stacked handles all along the side. When ready to use one – just move it up and hook the handles so it doesn’t fall on itself. Simple and brilliant! Will make you feel less eco guilty at the shops too… Available at Uncommon Goods.
Garbage disposal is a prosaic process, but unless it is properly organized, nothing poetic is possible. And Tri3 by Paris based designer Constance Guisset is an organizational beauty, allowing for this process to go smoothly. The piece is essentially a trash bin and a recycling station in one. It consists of three parts (hence the name): the top segment is meant for organic waste, the middle one pivots to the side and stores plastic litter and the bottom compartment, the biggest one of the three, is dedicated to glass. All three parts are brought to movement by their respective pedals on the bottom. The disposable bags are stored under the hood. The vertical shape of Tri3 is not only attractive to the eye, it also saves space, allowing vertical storage. I also like the fact that the organic waste compartment is small enough to ensure frequent removal.
Garbage disposal is an unglamorous thing, but unless it is properly organized – nothing glamorous is ever possible. And this minimalist trashcan by Hommin makes good organizational sense. Unlike the Cuum piece, I featured yesterday, the Clip trashcan is very low-tech. It consists of two interlocking wooden frames, merged with clothespins on their ends. The object is compatible with all types of bags. You can use plastic ones for kitchen waste, and more elegant textile ones for paper. The Clip trashcan can also be used as a hamper. Smart stuff!
Eco designer Petz Scholtus recently celebrated the completion of her most personal project. She adapted her own apartment in Barcelona to a green lifestyle. The place, located in the historic Barri Gòtic area, is on the smallish side – only 58 square meters (624 square feet). It was in the desperate need of a major gut reno when Petz bought it in 2006. In order to make the apartment livable and green (and to save some green too), she implemented the five Rs of eco design: Reuse | Reduce | Recycle | Restore | Respect. If you hate cable clutter as much as I do – I will love this product! CableBin by Bluelounge is a smart and elegant way to manage unruly cordage. The piece resembles a slick dust bin, only instead of paper trash it holds all your bulky surge protectors. It uses adhesive components inside so you can latch hubs to the sidewalls of the bin and let the cables drop down the middle.
