As I have said before, I love pet-friendly furniture. Incorporating pet lounging areas into human furniture pieces is a great idea, especially in small spaces, where there isn’t enough room to separate the two. The Dog House Sofa by Korean studio min n mun, is another interesting step in that direction. The piece includes a cushioned dog house on one side, providing resting areas for you and your dog(s). The couch is made of ash wood and pet-friendly fabrics. I love how current its design is. And, again, if your dog decides not to adopt the sofa (the phenomenon has yet to be precedented), you can use the pet house as storage.

Mattoni (“brick” in Italian) is a modular system of cardboard storage, created by designer Giorgio Caporaso. Any fellow cardboard lover will see the value of these highly sustainable, 100% recyclable pieces. The concept should appeal to the urban folk as well, because it allows us to build various configurations of storage for any space, big or small. The combinations are endless – you can create bookshelves, room dividers, credenzas, tables… Various finishes and colors are also available. Studio Caporaso even created a special unit as part of Mattoni system that enables you to cultivate a small green corner inside this storage. A new and dynamic way to bring nature in among the bookcases and display walls…

This minimal and clever coat rack reminded me of Veronika Wildgruber’s Wardrope. The idea is very similar, so are the space-saving qualities, making both of these items ideal for small space dwellings. The Roberope coat rack can be suspended from the ceiling and, thanks to its soft but sturdy hooks, can hold clothing, bags, accessories or just about anything suitable for hanging. Thanks to its neutral design and extremely modest space demands the rack can serve as flexible storage in any room of the house. Comes in a variety of bold colors.

Leading a sustainable life is a noble aspiration, but a tricky one to have if you’re living in a small apartment. Take compost, for example. Aside from being a messy process, it requires space we don’t always have. Luckily, designers do think about these things and come up with ideas. Here is one from London based design student Fanny M.E. Nilsson – a portable waste processor that turns your food leftovers into a liquid fertilizer. The piece, aptly called Re-Feed, is no bigger than a toaster. The idea is to throw the leftover food into the machine, close the lid, push a button and walk away. No fiddling with soil, no sacrificing units of space for bulky containers. “Inspired by lacking food waste recycling infrastructures in flats and high-rise housing in central London, the Re-Feed provides a simple alternative to sending waste to landfill or composting.,” – says Nilsson. When the fertilizer is ready – it can be fed to a plant through the convenient nuzzle. Re-Feed is fitted with the rechargeable battery,  so it can be easily moved to any room. The piece is only a concept at this point. Can’t wait to see it produced.

Netherlands based designer Ruben der Kinderen is the creative force behind this beautiful collection. Inspired by bushcraft (survival) techniques, these objects are assembled without screws or glue, but purely by using the forces of nature.

“I’m fascinated by survival and the things you can use in nature to make your stay comfortable,” – says Ruben. – “I went for 2 weeks to Sweden (into the wild-style) with a tent some food and my knife. By using different bushcraft techniques, to make my stay comfortable, i came to the conclusion that nothing in our own home interior has to by screwed or glued. Just by designing and making clever solutions everything can be of wood and rope.”

The system is modular. The tops of the tables are interchangeable, which provides for great flexibility. The simple and clever tripod construction is at the core of this project. At the bottom of the tabletop there is a chamber where the legs fit in. If there is a force on the tabletop the legs will spread, but as far as the walls of the chamber. Thus, the piece stays bendable and stable at the same time. A bright and elegant idea…

This foldable side table, called Hook, has been created by German-based designer Eric Degenhardt for the brand Richard Lampert. A lot of good thinking went into this design. The piece is lightweight, compact, foldable and can be suspended on the wall via the hook (hence the name).  The piece is quite a looker too, in both folded and unfolded states… “Hook is a small, round side table offering a multitude of uses: you can put your feet up on it or use it to rest your book or glass, depending on your needs at the moment,” – says the designer.

Every renter knows that IKEA’s ubiquitous nature cannot be fought. It’s that convenient shortcut most of us take at one point or another. Fortunately, there are entrepreneurial souls out there, who can help us to embrace Swedish fast food of furniture in a new and exciting way. This particular IKEA hack belongs to Andreas Bhend and allows us to built three original items from a humble Frosta chair. The redesigns include a wall-mounted shelving unit, coffee table and a coat rack. Called Frosta X, Frosta Y and Frosta Z respectively, the items do require some power tool action. But the result is well-worth the elbow grease. I also love the humorously drawn instructions. Watch the stop motion video to follow the process.
