a_Books shelf by German design studio linea1 is a beautiful minimalist way to store and display your reading and DVDs. The essence of these shelves is in their absence. The thinnest steel-sheet is bent to a resistant form. The geometry of the folded sheet metal makes a shadow that hides the mounting detail, creating a seamless blend with the wall. The biggest issue with the most filing systems out there – they tend to look like something you lifted from your office. Not terribly elegant. So, I’ve been in search for something lightweight and easy on the eye and stumbled on this item from Italian brand Magis Design. XX file holder is a modular and stackable storage piece. Stylish X-shaped frame holds your folders in perfect visibility, which promotes tidiness and systematic approach to filing. The frames can be combined into various configurations. You can use one or two units to store files on your desktop, or stack them vertically in multiples to capture those bits of left-over space that would otherwise not get used. I don’t know about you, but I find it hard to believe that this product has been designed in distant 1948. Danish designer Poul Cadovius created the Royal System for the furniture brand dk3. Modular and lightweight, this storage line assembles easily and creates a vast number of options. You can build bookshelves, media storage, workstations, kitchen storage, you name it. Here is how Barcelona based designer Roger Moliné describes his highly unusual and inventive Level shelf: “Level is a wall shelf that changes its shape depending on the content. When we put books in a category, that grows by increasing the volume available and enabling storage of more books. Thanks to the weight of the books, the shelf reveals the category with more books. The Clic shelf by French designer François Beautour is a kind of a good looking minimalist piece many of us would love to see by the front door. Cleverly scaled to a small dwelling, Clic combines a mirror and a shelf with a recess for placing items on top. But the coolest bit is the one we can’t see with the naked eye. Inside the shelf there are strong magnets that allow you to hang metal items. A perfect spot for your keys, USB drives, small tools and just about anything metal. Beautifully understated and practical design.

What desk doesn’t need more storage? The Drap shelf by Russian designer and craftsman Vladimir Soveng is a beautiful way to add useful storage to any workstation of any style and size. Its inventive shape allows you to accommodate various items – papers, books, magazines, writing paraphernalia. And by turning Drap on its side – you can change the look of the shelf and create more storage on top. A beautiful idea and fine execution.
Matrioshka storage is a witty nesting system, designed by Sasa Mitrovic of TwentyTree and manufactured by S.C.S. plus & Ergomade. As the name suggests, the smaller pieces fit beautifully inside the biggest one, making the set easy to store and transport. You also have freedom in the way you combine these cabinets in your space. The design subtly “makes you think about the mystery concealed behind the exterior appearance. It is an object that contains objects and, concurrently, protects our identity,”according to the designer.

I think this Tokyo skyline-inspired storage is fabulous. Venice based designer Luca Nichetto is the mind behind the project. She created this collection, called Tishi (’city’ in Japanese), for Italian furniture brand Casamania. The line is made up of several cabinets, different in size, height and shape. It allows you to create unique combinations, tailored for your specific storage needs. The cabinets are made from lacquered MDF and come in a variety of colors.
This modular bookcase made me look. Created by Antonella Di Luca and Ubaldo Righi of MR.LESS & MRS.MORE studio, Citybook storage system has been presented during the Milan Design Week. The piece is made up of multiple house-shaped modules that are linked together via small magnets. Easy to assemble and reassemble, Citybook is a good looking and flexible addition to any room. The bookcase is made from sheet iron, it comes in white and dark gray.

Grapple hanging system by Ryan Frank is another noteworthy Kickstarter project running at the moment. This unusual suspension storage idea is space-saving and cool. It is also highly eco-conscious. The bio-plastic hooks are made of Agriplast, which is an innovative material made from grass mixed with a small amount of plastic. I also like the crane-inspired design of the hooks.
