raz-krulfeld-1

Shelf by Israeli designer Raz Krulfeld is a great addition to a small kitchen. The clever piece allows us to keep our essentials within reach but away from the counter, which is a great space-saving tactic. The shelf is made up of two sections – the higher one is perfect for containers and spices, the lower one holds books, magazines as well as cereal boxes and other bigger items. The rear side of the shelf serves as a magnetic knife holder and also features hooks for utensils. To top it all off – there is LED lighting coming from underneath the shelf. An additional lighting source is never a bad idea…

Editor’s note: This is a guest post from Donald M. Rattner.

What better inspiration for a wine rack than a bunch of grapes? Grape is a modular wine rack that can be mounted on a wall, placed on a table top or sat on a floor. Interlock multiple units for a growing wine collection in all sorts of appealing configurations.

The rack is made of expanded polypropylene, a 100 percent non-toxic, recyclable closed cell foam. Because it’s both light weight and strong, the material is used as a packing material for high-end electronic goods which need maximum protection with minimal added weight during shipping. Reducing shipping weight has the added benefit of lowering the carbon footprint, adding to its environmentally friendly qualifications.

One unit holds 12 bottles and measures 23 5/8 x 15 3/4 x 7. Grape is sized to accommodate Champagne-sized bottles too.

Robert Bronwasser designed Grape in 2007. Son of an architect, Brownwasser is the principal of Smool, an award-winning and widely exhibited design firm based in Amsterdam.

This funny-face storage has been created by Japanese design studio Iremonya. The line, based on a system of drawers made of the eco-friendly recycled fiber board, is perfect for a kids room. Each drawer has two faces on each side, a smiling face and a crying face. Designers say that this concept symbolizes the fact that life contains both tears and laughter. Cute.

slot-in1

I love slot-in designs, as you might have noticed. They make assembly of furniture easy, eliminate fiddling with hardware and create playfulness that is hard to beat. This modular storage system by Belgian designer Xavier Coenen, called MoMogul, is a perfect example of this approach. A stackable solution, composed of three modules of different size, interlocks seamlessly to create customizable bookcases, media storage systems, display pieces and more. I love the agility of this idea. You can just as easily take the item apart and redesign it on the spot. Beautiful. The MoMogul shelving system is made from birch plywood and comes in a variety of colors.

I’m a big fan of the Bouroullec brothers’ designs, and this particular one is especially endearing. The little smooth shelves, called Corniches, create beautiful and multifunctional storage. Here is how designers describe their idea: “The same way that we hang our belongings on a rock jutting from a cliff before diving into the sea, we need small, informal storage in everyday life too.” Shaped as individual, isolated protrusions in space, Corniches adapt to your unique taste and purpose. Use them for your keys beside the front door, as a pedestal for a small collection of objects or as a broad wall display, – the choice is yours. And to aid your creative process the manufacturer, Swiss brand Vitra, created an iPhone app that lets you take a picture of your wall and virtually test the location of your chosen shelves. So cool.  Corniches are available for purchase here.

chevronshelves_wilson_8-500x333

Chevron Shelves by Australian designer Henry Wilson is a beautifully simple and adaptable object, perfect for small or frequently changing spaces. The piece is modular, so you can create a configuration specific to your interior and storing needs. It is also flat-packed. Each unit is assembled from four pieces of precision milled birch-ply. The shelves are put together via the slot-in principle without any tools or adhesives. I love the ergonomic tilt, allowing to see contents of the lower shelves at a glance. It’s also pleasing that the shelves are tall enough for big art books and magazines.

bikini

Bikini Island by German designer Werner Aisslinger, created for Italian furniture brand Moroso, is a new approach to a living room couch. Instead of traditional mono-directional sofa, facing the common TV screen, this modular item can be arranged to accommodate different space uses.

Here is how designer describes his idea: “Life in the living room has changed quite a lot recently: families and their kids are ‘chilling’ with different activities: reading, downloading files, writing emails, gaming, chatting with friends, watching movies on a pad, relaxing, talking, thinking, meditating… The easy to arrange bikini-sofa landscape invites to find ones own composition due to space and activities.”

The piece is comprised of various soft volumes of three different heights. Additionally, small storage items, coffee tables, bookshelves, and other accessories can be integrated into the unit. The curtains allow to isolate certain segments and provide privacy – perfect for a single-room layout.
