Since elementary school we know that gravity is a natural force that makes objects fall on people’s heads. US-based designer Alejandro Gomez Stubbs of Malagana studio employed gravity for doing exactly the opposite. The Equilibrium bookcase he designed is a combination of tilted shelving components that keeps things in place without the use of bookends. The modules are connected via hidden steel joints and look as if they are floating in the air. This weightless feeling is a disguise for a sturdy construction, that can withstand over 160lb. The piece can be assembled in minutes without the need of any tools or hardware, and, when disassembled, all pieces fit into each other for easy storage. The Equilibrium bookcase was shown at the American Design Club’s Use Me exhibition during the New York Design Week.

Here is another bookcase to love – the Stacked Shelving System, designed by JDS Architects for Muuto. This modular system lets you to create multiple configurations. The units come in three sizes (and give you five shapes, depending on how you position the rectangles), so you can accomodate books of any size and build the bookcase of your desired proportions. The negative space between the boxes can be used to create even more unique shapes. Clever!.. The pieces are held together by the colorful steel clips. Each box comes with an optional wall mount. You can purchase the Stacked Shelving System at DWR.

LED light is great, it is bright, long-lasting, energy efficient. It can also come in strips, which makes it perfect for various design projects. Designer Antoni Arola used these qualities of LED to create a line of luminous furniture, called BlancoWhile. He integrated light with shelves, bookcases, desks. The strips are hidden under the metal sheets and focused in the center to provide an even ambient illumination. The pieces are modular and can create multiple configurations, as big and bright as your space allows.

Bookworms – rejoice. There is a new way of storing and displaying your favorite tomes. Dutch designer Remi Van Oers created an entire furniture line, dedicated to reading. Made from wood and fabric, these pieces are not only modern and elegant, they also include a much needed book storage (the chair is equipped with the light to complete the experience). All pieces allow very generous space for books, making them a subject of showcase and a proud part of the design. A room full of book just got the whole lot cooler…

No matter what kind of opinions you hold on the subject, your cat will always believe that climbing on top of bookcases is awesome. And majestically eyeing the premises from the top shelf is even awesomer. You can enter a painful (and most likely futile) process of imposing restrictions on the cat, or you can embrase the inevitable and give him/her this brilliant thing. Created by belgian designer Corentin Dombrecht, the Cat Library bookcase is made in a shape of a staircase with a built-in sitting basket at its top. The piece is modular, which allows to fit it in any space. According to Designboom, the shelf is intentionally unpainted and is not oiled, so that the surface is not too slippery for cat paws. So, this may be furniture to you, to your cat it is just another toy. But isn’t this true for everything else in your home?
