This piece from New York based artist and designer Sebastian Errazuriz reminds me of the Piano Hanger, I featured earlier this year. Here too, the simple and ingenious principle of a piano-like structure is applied to generate adjustable storage. The Piano Shelf folds flat when not in use, occupying zero space in the room. Once you need to store something – simply unfold the sufficient number of ‘keys’ to accommodate the item. Brilliant! The shelf comes in black and white.

This sleek and concise piece is a combined effort of designers Bastian Diephaus and Ismail Özalbayrak of Studio Unieke. The minimalist wall desk, called S01, can serve as a practical storage unit when closed. When opened, it creates a comfortable workspace for one person. It even features a built-in power-strip for your cables – a nice touch for such a compact item. The So1 wall desk is made from powder coated steel and coated multiplex.

This multitasking object, called Scalo and designed by Benedetto Quaquaro for Cerruti Baleri, is not on a cheap side ($2,016.00). But it can do so many things! You can use it as a side or ocasional table, stool, shelving unit or a stepladder. Thanks to the hidden hinges, the transition is easy and seamless. Made from bent plywood, the piece features different colors on the inside. A durable stainless steal stop locks Scalo in both open and closed positions.

Flat-pack designs are very popular today, and there is a reason for it. They minimize the manufacturing efforts, reduce shipping costs and allow us to save space. And they also promote creativity. Just look at this collection by Ufuk Keskin! Called Flatobjects, the line consists of three pieces: Typeshelf – a type nerd’s delight and my personal favorite; Timewarp – a wall clock with laser cut numbers on the face that are ready to be bent; and Highrise – a dual function object which can be used as a vase or wall accessory. The collection is currently on display at the New York International Gift Fair until August 18.

There is a lot to like about this clever storage unit/home office from Myfab. It has that cool vintage 70s feel to it, its fold-up desk can generate an instant workspace when needed, it can also be put away when the work is done (extra points for space-saving). And it’s orange! The piece is made from MDF with high gloss finish.

This chair is a looker. Beautifully constructed by Lyon based designer Petit Romain, the piece, called Chaise Leaf, has a fluid continuity to it. It also features storage under the seat. This elegant little shelf can hold a few books, periodicals, an iPad perhaps… Made in a variety of colors, Chaise Leaf can add a happy note to a room. And if you like to read while you eat (one of my vices), this piece can be a nice dining chair too.

It seems that the more commonplace e-readers get, the more popular it becomes to incorporate actual books into objects. Even Philippe Starck participated in this trend by creating Bibliotheque Nationale – a lamp that features bookshelves. This multifunctional piece will help you to store your books, periodicals and other reading materials right under your light source. And if you have gone completely paper free, the lamp provides a comfortable charging station for all your devices.

Scene is a smart flexible storage system, created by Dick Spierenburg for Arco. Each unit is comprised of a wooden frame and various metal storage components, freely placed inside it. The components can be open, closed, or with doors and drawers, depending on your storage needs. The frame system itself it modular and can create various configurations – wall units, sideboards, bookcases etc. The sideboard version features a cable transit in the backside for media storage. Scene allows for different color combinations as well. I struggle to imagine what else we can want from a storage system…

This visually pleasing bookcase was designed by Laszlo Rozsnoki, who used layers of rope instead of solid shelves. The piece, called Ropeshelf, presents a hip and flexible alternative to a traditional storage system. The ropes, fastened to a stainless steel frame, can be easily adjusted to accommodate items of various shapes and sizes. This use of materials not only creates a graphical appearance, it also allows to store books and periodicals at an angle, which is the best way to prevent warping.

There is a lot to love about this cool minimalistic bed with integrated storage. Called Buden, the item was created by LA-based company Viesso, a young business that prides itself on making furniture ‘as Green as possible.’ The company uses environmentally friendly practices and chooses sustainable sources. This bed, for example, is made from bamboo – a fast-growing renewable material. But what gives it many space-saving points is the storage. Optional foot drawers, as well as base compartments and headboard drawers, are all available. Buden is customizable too – just give Viesso your specs.
